RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE
KENDALL COUNTY SPECIAL OLYMPICS
WHEREAS, Kendall County Special Olympics provides sports training and competition
in a variety of Olympic -type sports for children and adults with disabilities by giving them
continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and
participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, as well as other Special
Olympics athletes and our community; and
WHEREAS, the Kendall County Special Olympics is in Area 2 of Special Olympics in
the State of Illinois and has been serving athletes with special needs since 1970. The program is
maintained through Kendall County Special Education Cooperative; and
WHEREAS, the Kendall County Special Olympics currently has 60 registered athletes
ranging in age from 8 to 60 years old. The athletes reside in Yorkville, Montgomery, Plano,
Sandwich, Oswego, Newark and Lisbon. These athletes compete in five sports annually, cross
county skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, track & field and bowling; and
WHEREAS, the Kendall County Special Olympic athletes participate in the Polar
Plunge, the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run, and the annual fundraiser Family and Friends;
and
WHEREAS, 100% of all uniforms, equipment, registration and competition costs (food
and lodging) are covered through private donations and their fundraising activities; and
WHEREAS, many of the athletes need constant assistance and /or encouragement;
therefore, many volunteers are needed to run the program; and
WHEREAS, the Kendall County Special Olympics ensures a better quality of life for the
special needs athletes as well as their families.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the United
City of Yorkville, that the United City of Yorkville extends our appreciation to the Kendall
County Special Olympics program for the opportunities it offers special needs athletes and
hereby proclaims June 11 -15, 2008 as KENDALL COUNTY SPECL4L OLYMPICS WEEK in
support of the Kendall County Special Olympics athletes, their families and dedicated
volunteers.
ADOPTED by the City Council of the United City of Yorkville, Kendall County, Illinois
