YORKVILLE GREEN COMMITTEE
November 22, 2010
7:00 P.M. -Yorkville Public Library
Mission Statement: To advise the City Council of the United City of Yorkville, Illinois on ways to
enhance the community environment and ways to equip and encourage citizens and businesses to
participate in sustainable ecological practices.
Call to Order: Keane called meeting to order 7:00 p.m.
Welcome Members :Marta Keane-chairperson; Anne Engelhardt-secretary; Becca Cherwin;
Seaver Tarulis; Richard Scheffrahn; Al Green(until 8:20 p.m.); Cheryl Lee; Jonathan
Jackson; Jackie Dearborn—City of Yorkville liaison.
Guests: Jean Paetzel and Eric Paetzel, member of Chamber of Commerce and Chamber
Green Committee. Eric has suggested expanding the Green Business Designation to
businesses and organizations outside of the Chamber members. Eric showed the decal.
Approval of Minutes: Tarulis motioned to approve the Green Committee minutes for
September and October 2010. Cherwin seconded. All yes.
New Business: Solar Power Presentation
Community Garden Project
Keane Reconvened business meeting at 8:20 p.m.
Committee Reports:
1. School Outreach—update. Lee and Engelhardt reported on a visit with Dr.Wakely
Superintendent of Yorkville School District 115, on Friday,November 12, 2010.
a. Topics of discussion included recycling, green-scaping, energy savings,
alternative products, environmental savings, environmental curriculum.
They emphasized the desire to form a partnership and that the members of
the Green Committee are willing to provide information or presentations to
any size group in the district. Superintendent Wakely, who started in August,
has already worked on several environmentally friendly projects, such as
virtual backpacks for school-home information, paperless Board meetings,
and an outline to change out-dated lighting for more energy-saving lights on
the football field. Wakely expressed interest in working on a short and long-
range plan to incorporate changes for greening the district.
2. Share & Care Recycling Event—Oct. 16th Summary
a. Letter to Editor
b. Nov. 8th, Jackie, Glory Spies, and Marlin Hartman did a follow-up about the
Care & Share Recycling Event on WSPY Television.
c. Lee gave Engelhardt information from Three Fires Council in regard to
helping at the next Recycling Day. October 8, 2011 the Boys Scouts will be
at Hoover that weekend.
3. Plastic Bag Reduction—Update
a. Keane reported that California, Los Angeles County, is working on banning
plastic bags. The plastic bag industry is working to improve the
biodegradable bags.
4. Environmental Fair Committee—March 2011 progress
a. Dearborn reported that the City cannot get a one-day event insurance
policy rider for the Environmental Fair. Lee also commented that the
Chamber may be able to purchase an event rider. Lee will talk to an
insurance agent about the possibility of getting a one-day event for a group of
businesses for a cost to be shared by the group.
b. Raise table fee to $50.00 per booth. Lee motioned that the "Early bird"
applicant deadline will be January 14, 2011 and will be able to pay $35.00.
The final deadline is Feb 4. Engelhardt seconded. Vote: All "yes".
c. It was suggested that environmental waste haulers to make a contribution for
the event. Lee will ask Glory Spies to talk to the waste haulers.
d. Environmental re-usable bags with two Green Committees' logos in single
color on a single side, to keep the cost down. Mr. Paetzel is working on the
purchase of the bags.
e. Lee and Spies will meet to divide the tasks for the environmental fair. Lee
will Email the list of"Green Committee"tasks to the Committee.
£ A suggestion was made to use the empty parking lot in Countryside Center
for Com 2. Dearborn will follow-up with this suggestion.
g. A suggestion was to have vendors park in designated parking areas, off—site.

2. Music under the Stars event, 6 -9 p.m. in July 2011. Cherwin reported that she
has made contact with Tim Evans. Dearborn will talk to Tim Evans about
setting up a meeting with Cherwin and Jackson. They will meet and go over
details.
3. Keane asked for feedback from the Green Committee regarding the Solar Energy
presentation. Scheffrahn questioned some of the explanations about financing
and other items. The company wants the City's bonding power. Engelhardt
suggested that Scheffrahn write a summary of the points of support and points of
concern and Email the list as a draft to the other members of the Committee to
add to if they wish. Scheffrahn seconded. Vote: All "yes." Keane requested
that the committee's response be finalized and sent back to Keane by December
Keane adjourned the meeting at 9:49 p.m.
Next meeting is January 24, 2011.
