United City of Yorkville Senior Ad Hoc Committee
Meeting June 27, 2011
Beecher Community Center
Present: Cecelia Sanders, Robert Skidmore, Patty Strahan, Bette Schoenholtz, Rita Murphy
Bette Schoenholtz opened the meeting. Tim Evans is not able to attend today. There is a question as to
whether this is still an on-going, valid committee.
Approval of Minutes—There were 4 members present and it is believed this constitutes a quorum. Bob
Skidmore made a motion to approve the April meeting minutes. Rita Murphy seconded. Approved.
Old Business
1. The movie Gran Torino only had 6 attendees. Taking Chance will be the meeting next
month and this cost will be covered by the Knights of Columbus. Bette Schoenholtz asked
Patty Strahan to do a movie survey. Rita Murphy stated there are too many other activities
going on during the summer. Patty Strahan stated that there are a lot of scheduled activities
at Beecher.
There was a question of possibly doing some travelogues. Bob mentioned Deacon Dale
Metcalfe has one of the trips they took. Cele has one on Nepal. There are also DVDs on
various areas.
2. The Walking Club—Patty is waiting for the Rec Center to contact her about using that
facility. This month they went to Geneva to the stores on Third St. Bob mentioned he could
check on whether the K of C could sponsor a month or something at the Rec Center. Patty will
check to see what the cost might be.
4. St. Patrick's Youth group Picnic was a huge success. Several of the seniors sent personal
thank yous. The teens were very polite and everything was lovely.
New Business
The Thanksgiving Dinner will be Friday, November 18tH
Additional Business
The state fiscal year ends June 30th. Aging services got what they anticipated and did better
than other groups. Human Resources took huge cuts. They wanted to cut all non-Medicaid
recipients from services, but that did not go through. They did raise the eligibility for the
Circuit Breaker program and Senior Services will need to help people find alternatives for
medical costs.
The federal budget had significant cuts in funds to train seniors for jobs. They are also cutting
the RSVP 20% in the 2011. The 2012 budget is being worked on.
If AAoA gets less for activities there may need to be program cuts. Sandy Pastore from the
Oswego Senior Center is applying for a grant to train seniors.
Bette met with the 708 Board.
Bob Skidmore made a motion to adjourn. Rita Murphy seconded. Accepted.
Next meeting—Monday, July 25th, 8:30 a.m. at the Beecher Center
