YORKVILLE GREEN COMMITTEE
September 27, 2010
7:00 P.M.
Yorkville Public Library
Mission Statement: To advise the City Council of the United City of Yorkville, Illinois on ways
to enhance the community environment and ways to equip and encourage citizens and businesses
to participate in sustainable ecological practices.
Call to Order: Keane called the meeting to order at 7:12.
Welcome Members and Guests: Marta Keane - Chairperson, Anne Engelhardt-
Secretry, Al Green, Richard Scheffrahn, Cheryl Lee , Gary Rice, Seaver Tarulis, Becca
Cherwin, Jonathan Jackson, and Jackie Dearborn, City of Yorkville Civil Engineer.
Approval of Minutes: Dearborn explained where a change should be made to the
August minutes. Green motioned to accept the minutes with the following change: the
second half of#7 "need Jackie's report on application for Silver Level" should be moved
to #1- Clean Air Counts. Engelhardt seconded the motion. Vote: all "yes". Motion
carried.
New Business:
1. Combat Climate Change 10-10-10 www.350.org Keane explained a national
endeavor for people and businesses to take action to reduce air pollution with the
purpose to combat climate change. This fits with"Clean Air Counts" initiatives.
Keane suggested that the Green Committee do something to call attention to this
national project. Dearborn volunteered to put a link on the City's web site and a
press release to talk about Combat Climate change 10-10-10 and Clean Air
Counts.
Committee Reports:
1. Share & Care Recycling Event—October 16, 2010 at Fairgrounds—Work
Assignments. Engelhardt explained the progress for the Care & Share Recycling
Day and presented a task List. Engelhardt requested members' assistance on
various tasks before and on the day of the event. Members volunteered for
various tasks.
2. Plastic Bag Reduction—Posters and Magnets. Keane obtained free magnets and
information fliers about reduction of plastic and plastic bags. These are to be
handed out at Care & Share Recycling Day to the donors that drive through.
3. Environmental Fair Committee—2011 Progress. Saturday, March 5, 2011.
Lee explained the event to the new members. At the next meeting of the Green
Committee, Glory Spies will be invited with the goal to assist the Green
Committee in separating the tasks of the Fair among the Green Committee, the
Chamber of Commerce Green Committee, and the City of Yorkville. Lee will
bring estimate for costs and a general task list. Lee also requested that all Green
Committee members bring ideas to the next meeting for(1)the "how to seminars",
(2) family activities, (3) contact information for exhibitors. Some goals are to
have a wide variety of vendors and exhibitors that will appeal to the general
public and businesses; make family and children"hands on" activities; add
environmental-type "music"; shift the seminars; offer raffle tickets for people who
attend the seminars; offer possible different art project throughout the day with
crafts or uses of products that may be recycled at a later time. The theme this
year will be "How to ... Go Green" - 3r Annual Environmental Fair.
Lee moved that the Green Committee sponsor a"green Under the Stars event" in
the Yorkville city Park in the summer of 2011 to feature green music, local green
organizations, and green foods. Engelhardt seconded. Vote: All "yes".
Engelhardt will make the contact with the city and bring back possible dates to the
next meeting.
4. Water Conservation Committee— Storm water Management Program Plan.
The City has a plan. Keane will rearrange the agenda to list reports under City
of Yorkville. Wind Turbine report will be rolled into the Zoning Ordinance
section.
5. Chamber Green Committee—Update
Lee announced that Cambria Sales is the fourth to receive the Green Business
Designation, which will be advertised in the local papers. Lee recruited members
of the Chamber Green Committee to help with the Environmental Fair in the
spring.
Recommendation Progress Reports:
1. Tree Survey Recommendation-completed.
2. Tree City Recommendation
This project still needs to have an arborist on staff. City of Yorkville may need
to create a Tree Board, with one member who is an arborist.
3. Electronic Recycling Permanent Program Progress
Dearborn gave a report on the total pounds collected last month. Lee stated that
Vintage Tech is interested in coming to Yorkville and is working with a business
for a permanent drop-off site which will offer evening and weekend hours.
4. Franchise Agreement Recommendation—Update.
5. Recycling in Parks, Athletic Fields, etc. —Grant Update
There are 31 recycling cans located in 30 different parks in the City of Yorkville..
The recycling cans will have co-mingled recycling items. Dearborn figured out to
use a luggage (hand-held) scale to weigh each bag and record the weight as it is
collected.

Old Business:
1. Clean Air Counts
Dearborn reported that City of Yorkville may now qualify for the Gold Level and
is collecting data for that qualification.
2. Earth Hour
Next Global Date March 26, 2011 Keane asked for ideas on how to promote this
in the City.
3. Yorkville School Green Efforts Update.
Lee will contact Yorkville Superintendent Dr. Wakeley to set an appointment for
Lee and Engelhardt to meet with him, targeting the first week of November.
4. Building code Update committee
Update pm ASHRE Std 189.1 Scheffrahn reported that there was not a quorum
at the lat meeting.
5. Zoning Ordinance Committee Update
The meeting was Sept. 22. The group is re-writing all the zoning ordinances for a
first draft targeted for next summer.

Call to Order: Keane called meeting to order 7:06 p.m.
Welcome Members and Guests: Marta Keane-chairperson; Anne Engelhardt-secretary; Becca Cherwin;
Seaver Tarulis; Richard Scheffrahn; Al Green; Cheryl Lee; Jackie Dearborn—City of Yorkville liaison.
Approval of Minutes: September Minutes postponed until November Meeting. The minutes were not
attached to the agenda.
New Business:
1. Keane introduced the invitation to the Green Committee to participate during the Holiday Under the Stars
festival. (Glory Spies was unable to attend this meeting due to illness.) This event is planned for Friday,
November 19. Glory asked if the Green Committee was interested in staffing a booth to supervise a Holiday
craft featuring a recycled item. There was a general consensus that there are not enough Green Committee
members who would be able to participate in this event.
2. Hats for Green Committee members. Engelhardt will Email the information to new members,who can reply if
they want to order one.
3. Facebook. Keane and Lee suggested that the Green Committee have a facebook page. Keane motioned that
we make a request to the mayor for a social networking presence on the Internet, such as a facebook page for
the YGC and with voting members of the YGC to serve as administrators. Engelhard seconded. Vote: all
"yes".
Committee Reports:
1. Share & Care Recycling Event—Oct 16th Summary. Engelhardt gave a report. Members added
information; Engelhardt will update the report for the event file. Engelhardt will write a letter to the
editor, for the week of November 15tb,thanking the volunteers and sponsors of the recycled donations.
2. Plastic Bag Reduction—Poster& Magnets. Engelhardt motioned that Keane contact Jewel
Corporation to request that the posters be put up in the Jewel stores. Scheffrahn seconded. Vote: All
yes.
3. Environmental Fair Committee—March 2011 Progress. Dearborn reported that she was told that the
City's insurance agent stated that the City cannot get a one-day rider for this event. Lee reported that
she has contacted two agents who stated that it is common practice to purchase a one-day insurance
rider and that it is relatively inexpensive and the cost will be recuperated via the event. Dearborn
will pursue this further with the insurance company. Lee stated that she met with the Chamber of
Commerce Green Committee, who are pleased to have the City of Yorkville take charge of the
vendor applications, insurance, and payments, etc. The Chamber is very willing to co-host the event,
including marketing and promotion. Stephanie McCue volunteered to take over the "Youth
Activities" as part of the event. Another volunteer, Bob Jungwirth, will get the vendor contact list and
related information. At the November meeting, the Green Committee will spend time on discussing
and developing the list of"How to..." for the Go Green Environmental Fair. Lee will also write a
task list for the members of the Green Committee for specific ways to help before and at the day of
the Fair. Dearborn will check into the procedures for the budgeting of the environmental fair.

2. Engelhardt reported on the initial contact to Tim Evans, City of Yorkville Recreation manager,
asking about the YGC hosting one "Music Under the Stars" on a Friday night, 7- 9:00 p.m. next
summer. Tim needs an Emailed overview of the goals of the YGC for this event. Evans suggested a
July date and the City will work with the YGC on this event. Jonathan Jackson and Becca Cherwin
volunteered to oversee this event and will contact Tim Evans with the outline.
