Glory Spies opened the meeting.
Introductions
Approval of Minutes
After review, Barb Skidmore made a motion to approve, Bob Skidmore seconded. Approved.
Old Business
1. Fashion Show—The event went very well. Although it was a low turnout of seniors,
those who were there had a very good response to the program and believe it should be
done again, but not only for seniors, but for all, since sometimes children answer the door
and could let people in. This could be a community service project. The audience asked
good questions and felt they had learned something.
2. The Knights of Columbus have the menu set for the Thanksgiving Dinner to be held
Nov. 19th. Patty will ask CNN about sending out 2 meals on Thursday so the kitchen will
be free. There are some high school students who will be on hand to serve the meal.
Glory had contacted the Madrigal singers but had heard nothing back. The K of C will do
the plates, cups, plastic ware, etc. and also will have door prizes. Patty Strahan stated that
some agencies have been asking about donating prizes, also. Eldon Madden said that the
Legion Auxiliary has baskets they are auctioning off and someone could ask where they
got them. It was suggested to meet on the 15`h of November to make sure all is in place.
3. The movies at Beecher will be "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" this Thursday, "White
Christmas" on Dec. 15th, "The Great Debaters" in April and "Gran Turino" in June.
4. Parks and Recreation is having a Halloween Party on Thursday October 281h. Senior
Services Halloween party will be Oct. 29th. The Senior Services staff feel they have a
good working relationship with Parks and Rec. New catalogs will come out the end of
November.
5. PADS update—there has been a low turnout to start, but the weather has been warm.
Transportation may be a problem, but it was thought that this had been worked on.
New Business
It was suggested that the meeting in November, which is scheduled for Thanksgiving
week be changed. It was decided to hold the regular meeting on the 151h in conjunction
with the preview for the Thanksgiving Dinner. It was also decided not to hold a meeting
in December.
The K of C is also offering a Holiday Help Line for people to call in with problems of not
enough food for the holidays. They are making up a list of agencies that provide services
in the area. They are also holding a Toy Drive. There was discussion on how people are
screened to receive help. The St. Vincent DePaul group is doing some work on this,
although there are people out there who will try to scam gifts and food when they don't
really need them.
Additional Business
1. Glory Spies handed out the Volunteer of the Year applications for a senior volunteer
and asked for people to fill them out. There are categories for child, teen, adult and
senior. The award ceremony will be Wed. February 16 Ih, and nomination forms are
due back on January 14, 2011.
2. The HRC is also doing cold weather clothes collection and have bins around town.
They are asking for new or gently used items only, for all ages.
3.
Rita Murphy made a motion to adjourn, Bob Skidmore seconded. Meeting adjourned.
Next meeting--Monday, November 15, 8:30 a.m.. at Beecher Center
