Mission and Vision—Mayor Burd wants to have adequate services for seniors, to look at
what we have and add or maximize services for seniors.
Glory asked about funding for the senior meal program. The Salvation Army Golden
Diners had lost the federal funding a few years ago, but continued on their own until they
could no longer afford to fund it, and they stopped the program in Kendall County at the
end of December, 2009.
Bette reported that Senior Services has taken over providing the lunches with two people
working for them and they serve meals 3 days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday,
since Oswego provides meals on Mondays and Thursdays. They are getting a handle on
the costs. They ask for a $4 donation for a full meal. Bonnie goes to www.allrecipes.com
to get recipes printed out for various amounts of servings—they serve a lot of casseroles.
The number of attendees varies—Tuesdays, 40, Wednesdays, 30, and Fridays 50. Rita
explained that most then have a smaller meal in the evening. Glory asked about Upper
Crust, which provides the meals for Oswego, but they cost more. Senior Services actual
meal cost is $2.75 - $3 for food, plus staff cost. There is an Area Agency on Aging grant
for nutrition. Several years ago, CNN got the grant for Grundy and Kendall County for
home delivered meals and Oswego got the grant a year or so ago for the congregate
program.
Bette said there might be some federal stimulus money, but there are many rules for
accepting federal funding such as needing a dietitian and following nutritional guidelines.
The program is doing well so far.
Tim reported that Parks and Recreation took over Club 47. They offer swim classes and a
`silver sneakers' program and work with Patty Strahan at Senior Services to advertise
trips. Bette said there is a federal push on for healthy aging and they have gotten some
funds for fall prevention programs. Glory asked if there was a way to get input from the
seniors on what Parks and Rec can do. Rita said they had a `lunch and learn' last Friday
and it was well attended and the group was very receptive. This will continue on the last
Friday of each month. Previously they had to cancel program because of low attendance.

Senior Services has many programs at Beecher. There was discussion on the Movies in
the Park. A license has to be paid for each viewing. Bette said there are still hooks on the
wall for a screen. Tim stated the City has an LCD projector and he will check on
licensing fees.
Bette stated the Mayor has asked about transportation to the Rec Center. Tim said if the
Rec Center created programs just for seniors, the registration should be done at Beecher,
then the seniors would go to the center for the classes. There was discussion on
developing walking programs for healthy living, but in the past they have had problems
with pedometers as they don't keep working.
Other thoughts for programs
Closer relationship with Parks and Rec
Survey at the Beecher Center asking what people want that they don't currently have
Glory stated that Parks and Rec did one about 3 years ago. If a survey is gotten together it
can go out in the City newsletter and the Park District catalog. It was suggested that
Senior Services and Parks and Rec work together on this, however Glory stated that
Parks and Rec is City specific for residents. There was discussion on senior centers not
being city specific. Glory wondered if the County has a list of seniors.
Bonnie Olsem asked if every City Park in Yorkville has at least one bench. She would
like to make sure that they do.
Bette discussed Elder Friendly concept and suggests that we go through lists of issues
that have been raised. It was agreed to meet monthly.
Bette also discussed TRIAD programs. Glory wondered if there is something that shows
all the programs that are already offered. Tim suggested placing a page in the Parks and
Rec program. Bette suggested working on getting a page together and Glory said she
would develop one for the City newsletter. When people move into the community they
get it. The next issue will be September. Tim suggested a page on the City website.
Bonnie Olsem also suggested putting the senior garbage discount on the senior page.
Glory suggested this be consolidated into one page.
Meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
Next meeting—Monday, March 22°d, 8:30 a.m. at Beecher Center
Glory stated the Mayor would be appointing two individuals tomorrow to the committee.
