NEW BUSINESS:
1. Pennies from Heaven—Discussion
Director Spies stated that she brought collection jars with her and hoped that each
commissioner could take one with them and place it at a local business that they
frequent. The commissioner would be responsible for monitoring the jar on a
weekly or monthly basis. Good locations include gas stations, banks, and dry
cleaners. All donations will be given to the Food Pantry. The jars are due by
October 31, 2009, however, that date could be extended if the collection is going
well. Director Spies stated that she would have jars at the County Fair and
Hometown Days.
Mayor Burd asked if Millbrook had received a rain barrel. Director Spies had not
heard from them, however, she will reach out to them and be sure they get a rain
barrel.
OLD BUSINESS:
I. Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Silver Dollar—Update 1 Discussion
The commissioners were asked if they had something to discuss regarding this
matter. Sgt. Groesch stated that he spoke to Maria from the Food Pantry and she
stated that families will be allowed to do both — attend the Thanksgiving Dinner
and also be given food items to prepare a meal at home.
Director Spies stated that the previous discussion was regarding transportation.
Sgt. Groesch feels that the commission should be cautious with this matter.
Commissioner Sanders suggested that the senior vehicles be used if the
transportation program has not yet started.
This item was moved from last month's agenda as Commissioner Iljazi was not
present; however, he is not present at this meeting either, so it will be placed on
next month's agenda for discussion.
2. Volunteer of the Year Award—Update/Discussion
Commissioner Cross stated that she contacted everyone on her list and sent them
the information. She copied Director Spies on everything. Groups that she
contacted are the Yorkville Lions Club, AC Society, American Legion, and
M.O.P.S.
Commissioner Slocum stated that she contacted everyone on her list to tell them
about the program and asked them to keep it in mind. She told them all she would
follow up with them in August. The deadline for submission is September 4,
2009.
Director Spies stated that she was contacted by the Citizen's Policy Academy as
they wish to nominate someone.
2
Discussion took place regarding someone making a nomination that is not part of
the list. It was determined that the pamphlet is used as a guide. No one is
prohibited from making a nomination.
Commissioner Knutson stated that she needs contact information for the Jr.
Women's Club as she has been unable to make contact with anyone. Director
Spies will forward her information on 2 people, including President Jackie
Williams.
Director Spies stated that she believes there will be enough funding for light
appetizers and that the event will be a positive change.
This item was moved to the next agenda for further discussion and follow up.
3. Government Dad=—Update 1 Discussion
Chairperson Gengler stated that he has tried to contact Mike Dunn with no
success. Additionally, he wished to speak with Mayor Burd regarding guidelines.
Commissioner Slocum suggested opening this event up to students of the middle
school. Chairperson Gengler suggested holding 2 events, 1 for high schoolers and
1 for middle schoolers. Mayor Burd was open to the suggestion, but stated that it
should not be open to students in grade school.
Discussion took place regarding when the event should take place. Mayor Burd
suggesting holding 1 in the fall and 1 in the spring near election time.
Director Spies will forward the contact information to Chairperson Gengler of the
person who set the event up for the middle school. Chairperson Gengler will
invite representatives from the district to attend either the August of September
meeting to discuss this matter further.
This item was moved to the next agenda for further discussion and follow up.
4. Governor's Hometown Award — Submission of Food Pantry — Update 1
Discussion
Chairperson Gengler informed the commission that Director Spies sent out the
application and asked her for more information.
Director Spies stated that she just received notification via email that the Food
Pantry has been selected for a site visit. The site visit will take place on August 6,
2009 at 12:00 p.m. Director Spies contacted Maria to confirm that the date was
acceptable. She also suggests that someone from the commission be present
during the site visit. Cele Sanders volunteered to attend. Furthermore, she stated
that noon was a perfect time since seniors will be served at that time and others
will be there to get food from the pantry. The committee should be able to see the
Food Pantry in operation.
3
Discussion took place regarding what is involved with a site visit. The reviewing
committee comes out and looks around and asks some follow-up questions. They
are mainly focused on the volunteer aspect.
Mayor Burd wished to express to the commission that they had done a good job.
This item will move to the next agenda for an update on the site visit.
ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING AGENDA:
ADDITIONAL BUSINESS:
Mayor Burd — last year the City participated in the Float your Boat program. This
year she has people that are willing to build boats, but needs volunteers to ride in
them. The event will be held on August 22, 2009 at Mastodon Lake in Phillips Park,
Aurora. She stated that if anyone has input about the type of boat the City should
build, please feel free to submit your ideas via email to her. Commissioner Cross
stated that the event is a nice family event and that more information is available at

July 2009
Dear MayorNillage President:
The Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award is back! This year marks the 35th anniversary
of the Illinois Humanities Council and the 10th anniversary of our awards program to
honor humanities heroes working across Illinois.
Studs Terkel, the nationally-renowned author and oral historian, lent his name to the award,
which recognizes the often-unsung crusaders for the humanities; ordinary people doing
extraordinary things for their communities. Since 1999,nearly 500 recipients of the Studs
Terkel Humanities Service Award have been honored in civic ceremonies across the state.
Once again, we are asking you to identify worthy recipients for this award by nominating
members of your community who have demonstrated a sustained and significant

CHICAGO,IL 50602.3296 The people who deserve this honor may not come immediately to mind. They may work
312.422.5580 behind the scenes or in volunteer positions outside your purview as mayor. A humanities
ww-w..prairie.org hero might be the high school history teacher who fights to preserve a local landmark, the
volunteer who organizes a storytelling hour for kids at the local library, or the amateur
genealogist who researches your town's founders. Preference should be given to persons
who serve the humanities as volunteers. However,we will also consider staff members of
civic, educational, or cultural organizations whose efforts exceed the call of duty.
A nomination form and fact sheet are enclosed, and nominations are due September 15,2009.
Each mayor or village president is able to nominate one person. Heads of communities above
100,000 in population will be able to nominate three people. If nominated individuals meet
the criteria outlined on the fact sheet, they will receive the handsome bronze medal we are
striking especially for this award.
if you have any questions about the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award, you can contact
me or my colleague Maggie Berndt by phone (312.422.5580), fax (312.422.5588), or email
(kav@prairie.org). Thank you for your help in identifying unsung humanities heroes in
Illinois. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

(Revised 0512912009)
Significant Activity/contribution that the individual has performed to
warrant nomination:
Char is an active part of the Yorkville Junior Women's Club (YJWC) and has
been for several years. She organizes our annual Home for the Holidays
Housewalk that is held in December. This involves locating and asking
homeowners to be in the housewalk, finding sponsors and matching them up
with the various homes, coordinating workers to be in the homes for three shifts,
involving other civic organizations for assistance, working with a local restaurant
to put together an inexpensive menu, gathering raffle items as well as a small
token of appreciation for ticket holders, advertising in various venues, setting up
liaisons for the various homes, doing walk throughs at various points, collecting
money for tickets and advertising and so much more. On the day of the
housewalk, she is out and about early to set-up signs and make sure everything
is running smoothly. She then fills in where needed.
Char also steps up to the plate to offer valuable ideas on how to help others as
well as how to spend money raised from our endeavors. She recently also
undertook our Valentine's for Seniors which includes pulling together trinket
items and distributing them to a local nursing home facility. Char puts in
additional time and helps out at a lot of our other fundraisers as well.
Describe how this activity/contribution has impacted the United City Of
Yorkville, a local organization, group of individuals or an individual:
The housewalk provides extra exposure for the local businesses that sponsor
homes and in turn they receive extra traffic throughout the year. It also provides
funds for the YJWC to give back to the community by way of the library,
scholarships, and park sponsorship to name a few. This event also draws
shoppers from outside the area into Yorkville and is quickly becoming a must do
for the holiday season. In 2008 Char and her committee brought in the most
money we have ever brought in for the housewalk and 100% of these profits go
right back into our community. She came up with new innovative ideas and put
them into action which in turn provided excess profits. The 2008 housewalk was
by far our biggest moneymaker of the year but also took the most "volunteer'
time.
Estimate the amount of time during the year that was devoted to the
activity described below.
200+ hours
In your opinion, what makes this individual an outstanding volunteer?
Please describe.
Char is always willing to pitch in whenever needed. In addition to making sure the
events she chairs go well, she is always available to help out at all of the other
YJWC fundraising events/activities. She puts her heart into whatever she takes
on and you can count on Char to follow through on anything she participates in.
Char also puts new ideas out there and is willing to take risks by putting these
ideas into action.
What specific characteristics/qualities does this person possess that you
admire?
Follow through, can do attitude, responsible, compassionate for others in need,
driven. She truly cares about our community and puts many hours into
volunteering to make it a better place to live.

Dear Neighbors,
Hello, my name is Jacob Carlson, I am 9
Years old and I live in GrandeWserve. This
summer I learned about and visited the Hesed
House in Aurora. It is a shelter that helps and
ministers to poor and homeless people. They
give them beds, food, cloches, friendship and
hope. I have asked them what I could do to
help and now more then ever they are in need of
donations. I decided that I would do a
neighborhood donation drive and would like to
asK for Your help! If You would like to give to
the Hesed House just place your donation in a
bag and place that outside of Your front door on
Sat. August, isth by io a.m. or you can drop off
your donation at 2948 Crider Way anytime on
that Thursday or Friday before.
On $aturdaY I, with my family and friends, will
walk through our neighborhood and collect the
bags to give to the Hesed House. I have
attached a list of things that the they are in
need of but anything that you can give will be a
blessing and help a lot of people.
