The commissioner would be responsible for monitoring the jar on a weekly or monthly basis. Good locations include gas stations, banks, and dry cleaners. All donations will be given to the Food Pantry. The jars are due by October 31, 2009, however, that date could be extended if the collection is going well. Director Spies stated that she would have jars at the County Fair and Hometown Days. Mayor Burd asked if Millbrook had received a rain barrel. Director Spies had not heard from them, however, she will reach out to them and be sure they get a rain barrel. OLD BUSINESS: L Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Silver Dollar—Update/Discussion The commissioners were asked if they had something to discuss regarding this matter. Sgt. Groesch stated that he spoke to Maria from the Food Pantry and she stated that families will be allowed to do both — attend the Thanksgiving Dinner and also be given food items to prepare a meal at home. Director Spies stated that the previous discussion was regarding transportation. Sgt. Groesch feels that the commission should be cautious with this matter. Commissioner Sanders suggested that the senior vehicles be used if the transportation program has not yet started. This item was moved from last month's agenda as Commissioner Iljazi was not present; however, he is not present at this meeting either, so it will be placed on next month's agenda for discussion. 2. Volunteer of the Year Award—Update/ Discussion Commissioner Cross stated that she contacted everyone on her list and sent them the information. She copied Director Spies on everything. Groups that she contacted are the Yorkville Lions Club, AC Society, American Legion, and M.O.P.S. The deadline for submission is September 4, 2009. Director Spies stated that she was contacted by the Citizen's Policy Academy as they wish to nominate someone. 2 Discussion took place regarding someone making a nomination that is not part of the list. It was determined that the pamphlet is used as a guide. No one is prohibited from making a nomination. Commissioner Knutson stated that she needs contact information for the Jr. Women's Club as she has been unable to make contact with anyone. Director Spies will forward her information on 2 people, including President Jackie Williams. Director Spies stated that she believes there will be enough funding for light appetizers and that the event will be a positive change. This item was moved to the next agenda for further discussion and follow up. 3. Government Day—Update/Discussion Chairperson Gengler stated that he has tried to contact Mike Dunn with no success. Additionally, he wished to speak with Mayor Burd regarding guidelines. Commissioner Slocum suggested opening this event up to students of the middle school. Chairperson Gengler suggested holding 2 events, 1 for high schoolers and 1 for middle schoolers. Mayor Burd was open to the suggestion, but stated that it should not be open to students in grade school. Discussion took place regarding when the event should take place. Mayor Burd suggesting holding 1 in the fall and I in the spring near election time. Director Spies will forward the contact information to Chairperson Gengler of the person who set the event up for the middle school. Chairperson Gengler will invite representatives from the district to attend either the August of September meeting to discuss this matter further. This item was moved to the next agenda for further discussion and follow up. 4. Governor's Hometown Award — Submission of Food Pantry — Update 1 Discussion Chairperson Gengler informed the commission that Director Spies sent out the application and asked her for more information. Director Spies stated that she just received notification via email that the Food Pantry has been selected for a site visit. The site visit will take place on August 6, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. Director Spies contacted Maria to confirm that the date was acceptable. She also suggests that someone from the commission be present during the site visit. Cele Sanders volunteered to attend. Furthermore, she stated that noon was a perfect time since seniors will be served at that time and others will be there to get food from the pantry. The committee should be able to see the Food Pantry in operation. 3 Discussion took place regarding what is involved with a site visit. The reviewing committee comes out and looks around and asks some follow-up questions. They are mainly focused on the volunteer aspect. Mayor Burd wished to express to the commission that they had done a good job. This item will move to the next agenda for an update on the site visit. ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING AGENDA: ADDITIONAL BUSINESS: Mayor Burd — last year the City participated in the Float your Boat program. This year she has people that are willing to build boats, but needs volunteers to ride in them. The event will be held on August 22, 2009 at Mastodon Lake in Phillips Park, Aurora. She stated that if anyone has input about the type of boat the City should build, please feel free to submit your ideas via email to her. Commissioner Cross stated that the event is a nice family event and that more information is available at www.uwfoxvalley.org including instructions on how to build a boat and where to get the cardboard. Commissioner Sanders suggested using the `Pennies from Heaven' theme for the City's boat. Director Spies — Maggie Kluck from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is holding a breakfast at Walter Payton's Roundhouse Restaurant on August 20, 2009 from 7:30-9:00 a.m. If anyone is interested in attending, please inform her. ADJOURNMENT OF THE HUMAN RESOURCES COMMISSION: Commissioner Slocum motioned to adjourn the Human Resources Commission Meeting. Commissioner Sanders seconded the motion. Hartigan. 4 DRAFT UNITED CITY OF YORKVILLE 800 Game Farm Road Yorkville, IL 60560 HUMAN RESOURCES COMMISSION MEETING City Hall, Conference Room Wednesday, August 19, 2009 — 6:30 P.M. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was not called to order due to lack a quorum. ESTABLISH A QUORUM: PRESENT: Chairperson Gengler, Commissioners Joan Knutson, Pat Slocum, Cele Sanders and Deanna Cross ABSENT: Commissioner Deanna Cross, Cele Sanders and Edmont Iljazi ALSO PRESENT: Sgt. Barry Groesch— Liaison, Glory Spies—Community Relations Director As no official business could take place, the following discussion took place. Commissioner Cele Sanders resigned from the Commission due to the fact that she has too many other commitments. Mike Dunn from Yorkville High School will attend the next meeting to discuss Government Day. He is very excited and school will be holding 2 separate sessions. Mr. Rick Falato has been unofficially nominated for the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award. Glory reported that the walk-thru Site Visit was conducted with state representatives for the Governor's Hometown Award. This site visit took place on August 6, 2009. All went well, however, no news has been received as of yet. The commissioners were reminded to follow up with their lists of volunteer organizations regarding submitting names for the Volunteer of the Year Award. Discussion— Glory stated that in the past, the committee has voted on the Historical Street Naming Program, and then forwarded the information to City Council for final approval. It was suggested that perhaps the nomination by the committee is not necessary and that Jennifer in Engineering could handle that since the request goes through the Street Department anyway. Jennifer would send the information directly to the City Council for 1 approval. Sgt. Groesch stated that his concern is that the Alderman probably want some separation from this matter. Commissioner Knutson stated that the City Council is a political body and this commission is not. She feels it is better suited coming from the Commission. Chairperson Gengler stated that former Commissioner Sanders' concern was that the signs were not being followed up on. Glory feels that when a name is selected, the family should receive a map indicating where the street is located and some type of certificate. The major issue is the cost of the signage. Sgt. Groesch suggested finding a donor; however, an additional line item would need to be added to the budget so that any donated funds would be separate from other general funds. Glory stated that developers are required to purchase 2 street signs as 1 is stored as backup. As is appears as though the Commission wishes to continue with this program, this item will be placed on the next agenda for discussion under new business. The commissioner gave updates on the Pennies from Heaven drive. Commissioner Slocum picked up the money from her location, but forgot to bring them in. She will bring it to Glory so that the change could be sent to the bank and counted. Commissioner Knutson will pick hers up and bring it in. Kendall CASA no discussion, hold for next meeting. Additional Discussion: The Mayor asked her to inform the Commission that Robin Frisch called and is seeking a way for her son to meeting others like himself within the community and they are looking for help. Her son suffers from Cerebral Palsy and is approximately age 22. Commissioner Knutson suggested meeting people on-line. Minute Taker Hartigan stated that she too has a child with Cerebral Palsy and suggested that they try the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association as they have many different activities and events for disabled persons of all ages. Glory was going to mention the FVSRA to Mrs. Frisch, but this item will also be brought back for further discussion at the next meeting. ADJOURNMENT OF THE HUMAN RESOURCES COMMISSION: Discussion concluded at 7:13 pin. Minutes respectfully submitted by Margaret M. Hartigan. 2 ♦,D C/Ty Reviewed By: Agenda Item Number Legal New Business #1 EST 1838 Finance ❑ Engineer ❑ Tracking Number 0 rn City Administrator ❑ 9 `° ' ` ? Consultant ❑ Agenda item Summary Memo Title: Illinois Humanities Council— Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award Meeting and Date: HRC-- g1tto jog Synopsis: Council Action Previously Taken: Date of Action: Action Taken: Item Number: Type of Vote Required: Council Action Requested: Submitted by: Glory Spies Community Relations Name Department Agenda Item Notes: SIT United City of Yorkville Memo 800 Game Farm Road EST 1836 Yorkville, Illinois 60560 -4 -` Telephone: 630-553-4350 0 rr-ls p Fax: 630-553-7575 Date: September I 1 To: Human Resources Commission From: Glory Spies, Community Relations Officer CC: Mayor Valerie Burd Subject: Nomination of Rick Falato for the Studs Terkel Humanities Award Per Pat Slocum"s recommendation to nominate Rick Falato for the Studs Terkel Service Humanities Award, I have attached the application that was submitted on August 24 on behalf of the Human Resources Committee of the United City of Yorkville. Describe briefly the individual's contributions to the life of the community through the humanities and indicate the organization(s) and causes(s) for which he or she has performed this service. Music is Poetry Put into Motion... The United City of Yorkville is nominating Mr. Rick Falato of the Yorkville Big Band for his extraordinary volunteer efforts for the community and for spreading his love of music to span generations. From the very young to the very old, Rick Falato's Big Band has been playing to record crowds in the Yorkville community and beyond since 1993. Though this nomination may be unconventional for the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award, Mr. Falato has accumulated over 40 years of teaching experience in the Illinois Public School System. Over the years he has mentored, taught and influenced thousands of children in the state of Illinois. He is not known for his love of the written word but for his devotion and unconditional dedication to another facet of the humanities—music. He has been volunteering his time and extraordinary talent to the Yorkville community for many years. His musical career began at Providence St. Mel's High School where he joined the band and took private trumpet lessons. After rising to the top as a trumpet soloist at St. Mel's, Rick went to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on a music scholarship. Rick earned a bachelor's degree at VanderCook College in Chicago after he decided be wanted to become a director instead of playing professionally. His first teaching position was in Coal City, IL. I Ie earned a master's degree at Roosevelt University in Chicago after serving in the U.S. armed forces. He is a teacher, mentor, a proud American citizen and a role model for future generations. It is with honor and pride that the United City of Yorkville nominates Mr. Rick Falato as the city's nominee for the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award 2009. His role as a mentor.., Mr. Falato has touched the lives of many. Over the years his teaching and love for music has inspired many of his former students to enter the world of music by teaching and playing professionally. In his fifth grade beginners' band over 30 years ago, 15 of his former students are teaching instrumental music in school systems around the county. Many others whose lives he has touched have chosen to play professionally. "Teaching has brought me the greatest joy,'" says Falato. "Watching kids enjoying making music and knowing that even though most of them will not do it as a profession, they will have these memories as adults and pass it on to their children. The movie `Mr. Holland's Opus' said it all for school band directors." Mr. Falato feels his band has brought community pride and recognition to the city through their performances, presence on many radio shows and worldwide via the Internet. One of Mr. Falato's greatest accomplishments has been to include youth and high school students in his band. "It inspires young people to have a healthy outlet for their talent." Yorkville"s Mayor Valerie Burd agrees. "Mr. Falato works and volunteers on behalf of the entire community both young and old," says Burd. "For more than a decade Mr. Falato has worked tirelessly to expand musical opportunities in our community. By including our young people in his band he provides them with a great opportunity to play with a quality band. Students from high school get to play alongside professionals. What a great learning experience." Burd also commends the Yorkville Big Band for all of their contributions to the city. "The band has brought a lot of joy and appreciation for music of the 1940s and 1950s through his often free concerts that have enriched our community.'" she says. "He works long hours for free without pay."
