AID-HOC COMMITTEE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT DRAFT
Minutes from Thursday, October 11 , 2007 Meeting
The meeting was called to order by Jill Fleishman at approximately 7 : 15pm
A sign-in sheet was completed, showing Anne Engelhardt, Marta Keane and Tony Scott (for The
Record) in attendance.
Lisa Pickering is the United City of Yorkville' s Deputy Clerk and requested that a recording of
the meeting be made and minutes formally typed.
Jill asked for someone to be the secretary and Marta Keane volunteered, Jill and Anne agreed.
Jill began by explaining that Mayor Valerie Burd had asked her to create a committee based on
community interest in the environment. Mayor Burd was going to attend this evening but had a
conflict arise. This is the first Ad-Hoc Comrnittee formed by the United City of Yorkville and it
is to be recognized by the City as an official committee with the power to make
recommendations. The Village of Oswego has a similar committee established and the idea of
reviewing their structure for the purpose of copying it is under consideration.
Thursday night proved to be difficult for several people that expressed their regret at being
unable to attend. Jill suggested that the next meeting be held on a Monday evening at the
Yorkville Library at 7pm. It was agreed that the next meeting will be on Monday, October 22 in
the first floor meeting room of the library.
A brief brainstorming took place to identify additional possible committee members. Some to the
people mentioned included Bill Ditmer and Chuck Roberts, members of Friends of the Fox,
Tony Graff and Don Lupe.
Jill asked Marta and Anne what they were interested in as goals for the Committee, Marta
expressed interest in the City joining the State of Illinois Cool Cities program and endorsing
LEED standards for new buildings.. Anne expressed interest in creating a series of presentations
with speakers from the City' s Recycling Collection Contractor (Veolia), the Conservation
Foundation, Native Plantings and non-chemical weed control. As brainstorming continued, other
ideas included Zoning ordinances that kept open space intact, Long Range Planning that ensured
the City would maintain the County atmosphere it promotes and the development of a resource
list for the committee that would include grant and environmental information sources.
An item for the next committee agenda will be to determine a better name for the committee.
The meeting closed at 7:45pm
Respectfully Submitted 10- 16-07
Marta Keane, Secretary
