RESOLUTION TERMINATING CONTRACT WITH NICOR GAS
FOR WATER METER READING SERVICES AND AUTHORIZING THE HIRING OF
TWO PART-TL%,IE WATER METER READERS
WHEREAS, the United City of Yorkville currently has a contract with NICOR GAS to read
the City's water meters at an annual cost of$6,500.00; and
WHEREAS,NICOR GAS has not been providing acceptable levels of service to the City and
that NICOR GAS' service has placed an undue burden on the water billing staffand the Public Works
u Department; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council deem it to be in the best interest of the City to
terminate the contract with NICOR GAS and to hire two part-time employees to read the meters for
the City whose duties and responsibilities are set out in the attached Job Descriptions; and
WHEREAS, by hiring two part-time meter readers as employees the City believes that it will
obtain more accurate readings on the water meters and ultimately save the City time and money;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE UNITED CITY OF YORKVILLE,upon
motion duly made, seconded, and approved by a majority of those Alderman voting, it is hereby
resolved that the City hereby terminates the water reading contract with NICOR GAS and hereby
creates two part-time positions for water meter readers subject to the attached Job Descriptions.

Water Meter Reader
JOB DESCUPTION
Department: Administration
Reports To: City Administrator
Status: Part-time
Positions Description Overview
This individual will be responsible for reading city water meters throughout the City as directed,
This position involves customer contact and a vehicle with a valid Illinois Driver's License.
Accuracy and attention to detail is necessary.
Essential Job Functions
1. Read the water meters in the area assigned by the 15th day of the month prior to each
bimonthly water billing dates,ie: 2/28;4/30; 6/30; 8/31; 10/31; 12/31.
2. Recheck readings that appear to be in error as directed,
3. Work closely with the Water Billing Clerk to assure a smooth seamless and timely flow
of information.
4. Recommend and advise supervisors of any potential safety problems, security concerns or
process improvements.
S. Other duties as assigned by the City Administrator.
Requirements -Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to read and record water meter readings in a systematic and orderly fashion.
2. Ability to learn to read meters by reading and recording touch pad readi ng

reading as appropriate.
'I 3. Ability to drive and to carry the reading equipment when walking from house to house.
4. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Minimum and Preferred Experience and Education
1. High School diploma or General Equivalency diploma.
2. Trainable as to following routes and recording readings.
3. Must successfully complete a background investigation with findings of good character
and no felony convictions.
Working Conditions
Work is independently planned with the 14 day window and completion date is established by
the Water Billing Department.

time,work in small cramped areas,walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. Work in a
variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements. May come in contact with domestic
animals.
