Park Board Minutes 1994 08-10-94 August 10, 1994
Park Board meeting, City of Yorkville
Members present: Steve Bridge, Dave Dockstader, Dave Schmelzie, Cindy Davidson.
City of Yorkville Administrator Jim Nanniga and Scott Sleezer from Public Works Dept. and
Alderman Art Prochaska also present.
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Bridge at 7:10 pm.
The expanded hours of the Rec. Dept. were discussed. Ann Scoll said she had not received any
calls of a business nature in the afternoons. The Board would like Ann and Becky to continue to
be in the office in the afternoons. The responsibility of scheduling the activities in the Beecher
Bldg. will probably become the Rec. Depts. as well. Ann, being a department head, can
communicate directly with other department heads and cut out a lot of the time wasted going
through others. She can also make calls to contrators for bids. She is also invited to attend the
city's "Plan Council" which meets Tuesday's at 9:00 am. at the City Hall.
Scott Sleezer wants to clean-up the park at the dam, by edging the equipment areas, filling with
new sand and painting the equipment. He said this wouldn't cost more that $1,000.00.
A motion was made to buy the supplies for the dam park using land/cash money not to exceed
$1,000.00. 2nd. and approved.
Scott passed out a Gazebo plantings plan. It will be mainly short/low perenials.
A motion was made to use land/cash funds not to exceed $1,500.00 to purchase materials for the
gazebo plantings and installed by City employees. 2nd. and approved.
Scott presented bids from lawn maintenance companies with TruGreen being the cheapest at
$1,928.28 for two applications per year for all park property except the the baseball fields and the
Prairie Park.. It was suggested that the money for this should come from the Parks dept. funds
rather than the Recreation Dept.
Scott will see how much it would cost to do the ball fields as well which are really bad with
weeds.
The four corners at the Beecher Bldg. need to be totally cleaned out and replanted. Scott will
come up with a plan. Steve suggested that the City employees remove the shrubbery .
Scott asked about trees that were donated and put in the City Square Park with markers on them.
There has to be some control on the size and placement of these markers or it will begin to look
like a cemetary. The markers should be small and "tasteful" and made of brass.
Scott would like to hang the garbage cans in the parks on 6 x 6 inch post and bolt them to the
post so they can't lA. He will expkiment with the can in Prairie Park and see how it works.'
Bills were presented for payment.,approval.
A motion was made to pay the bills as presented, 2nd. and approved.
Ann also needed a check for postage for the flyers for the Fall Scehdule to be mailed out.
A motion was made for postage for flyer mailing not to exceed $500.00. 2nd. & approved.
2.
The Golf Outing income looks very low until one realizes that it was split between two fiscal
years.
Ann is to call Cal and/or Rena Pedersen, who now own Parkview School, and ask about possibly
renting the gym of that school for some of our activities.
The little park on Colonial Parkway needs some play equipment eventually, but first some sort of
guard rail has to be put up along Rt. 47 since the park is next to the road.
Scott and the Park Board asked Art to relay to the Police Dept. that we all would like more/better
policing of the park at the dam. People are still drinking alcohol there and trashing the area.
Dave S. wondered if we could get playground equip. from schools that are closing, or would it
cost more that it was worth to move it, rather than just buying it in the first place.
Art has been asked about putting signs in all the parks with the park name on it. Some sort of
standard design made of wood - carved in relief. People could donate the cost of the sign and
have their names placed on the back of the sign.
Jim went up on the Beecher Bldg. roof today with Glossip Roofing and they will be flooding the
roof Monday to find where all the leaks are. It seems to be leaking mostly in the vertical siding
because the joints are so shallow- 3/8" or less.
Art suggested that the Board set-up job descriptions for The Director and Asst. Dir. so that
everyone knows what they should and can be doing.
Art asked, on behalf of the Lyons Club, what exactly is the City willing to do for the Pool in case
of a catastrophe. Would we be willing to give them more money, if so, how much?A figure of
$10,000.00 was suggested for a °catastrophe which would shut the pool down between certain
dates, e.g: between June 1 and Sept. 1." Art will take our suggestion back to the Lyons Club.
A motion was made to adjourn, 2nd. and approved.
Next regular meeting- September 14, 1994.
