It is staff recommendation to waive the fees for this event, but allow for a security deposit to be made to the Recreation Dept, per policy. This organization has and will continue to financially support the Park and Recreation Dept, as well as other activities throughout the community. Their hard work and dedication is very valuable to this town. It would not be practical or in our best interest to charge them for use of the park for this fundraising event. War and other disasters have taken their toll. Unfortunately, in this area, the seniors in The Salvation Army Golden Diners program, especially those who receive the Home Delivered Meals (HDM), are in need of some assistance, too. These older people, a majority of them women, are now homebound and unable to shop or prepare meals for themselves . The Golden Diners program provides a nutritionally-balanced noontime meal each weekday, brought to their homes, mostly by volunteers, For many, this is the only 'good' meal they eat each day. About 18% of these seniors live at or be!ow poverty level (about $9,800 per year). Others have high medication costs 20% of the recipients of the HDMs are unable to contribute anything toward the cost of their meals. This is a loss to our program of approximately $ 135,849 annually. We request a donation of $2,75 per meal, and although the actual meal cost to our program is about $6. 00 per meal, no one is refused a meal due to an inability to contribute. Many of these elderly are in need of a nutritious meal each day to help prevent malnutrition, a growing problem in seniors. In Fiscal Year 2006, The Salvation Army Golden Diners provided 149,665 Home Delivered Meals to 1 ,391 homebound seniors in Kane, Kendall, and McHenry Counties, and 58,226 meals at Congregate 'on site' to 3,157 seniors who are able to join us for lunch at one of our 15 sites in these same counties. During this season of Hope and Blessedness, we ask you to help us continue to provide meals for these elderly citizens who are unable to contribute toward the cost of this service. Our program relies heavily on the donations of the diners, and on those who are able to give more to help those less fortunate. May God Bless you and your family in the coming days. of Gpd Captain Vicky Horton Golden Diners Director Yes, I want to help The Salvation Army Golden Diners to provide meals to homebound seniors. 13.75 covers meals for one senior for one week; $27,50 covers meals for one senior for two weeks; 55 covers meals for one senior for one month; $660 covers meals for one senior for one year Name Address City, State, Zip Amount of tax. deductible donation $ Please make your check out to:The Salvation Army Golden Diners Mail to: 1031 E. Spies Community Relations Manager United City of Yorkville 800 Game Farm Road Yorkville IL 60560 RE : Street Naming Project to Honor Irvin F . Monkamier Dear Glory , It was great talking with you . I ' m enclosing the letter which I received from Pastor Gilbert regarding my father . My father was rather amazing in many ways . For many years he was the Treasurer of the Cross Lutheran Church .He was a self- taught bookkeeper .He never had the opportunity to attend high school since he had to quit school in order to work to help support his family .He seemed to have a natural ability with figures and was an excellent money manager .This love of his to handle money wisely and well turned into a passion with my father which led to his Treasurer experience . He was a meat cutter for many years and this was also something he picked up on his own by watching another meat cutter .It seems as though whatever he wanted to do or learn he accomplished on his own by listening and learning from others who became his teachers by example .Attending a class to learn these skills was out of his financial range as money was very tight and scarce during those years . The more I write about him the more I realize just how remarkable he really was . I was so fortunate to have such a role model .My parents taught by example which I feel is the highest and best way to teach.Their values have become the fiber of my very being . If you need copies of the rest of the materials I previously sent to you let me know and I ' ll get them to you . I ' m also enclosing one of my writings which I hope you will enjoy . Monkamier, and the possibility of a street being named after him.. Iry and his wife Minnie, also known as simply as "Mom", lived many happy years together on west Van E.mmon in Yorkville. Although I did not get to know them until 1983 when I became their pastor at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, I knew them to be kind, generous, and joyful people. I suppose that what I remember most about Iry personally is that he was a "counter" for many years at Cross, joining with others on Monday nights to count and record the offerings of the people. Then he and one other counter (it was Del Becker in my day) would drive the offerings to the bank to put in the night depository. Iry would always get out of the car to make sure there were no unsavory characters about who might steal the offerings, then he would signal the driver to come ahead because all was secure. Iry and Minnie also had a deep love for children. They would often sit toward the back of the church, not ,just because they were Lutherans and that's where Lutherans love to sit, but rather because they loved to sit with families with small children. They often acted like foster grandparents to many kids. There are many worthy citizens of Yorkville. Iry and Minnie 's daughter Shirley Anne Briggs can supply you with more biographical and historical information if you would like. I simply write this to you to commend to you a man who was kind, gentle, good- humored, and who served God and the community with a joyful and generous heart. Thank you for serving the community, and thank you for the 23 wonderful years that my family and I were able to live in Yorkville. It will always be in our hearts. Sincerely, Rev, Dan P, Gilbert Rev.
