Introductions
Mayor Art Prochaska invited members in attendance to introduce themselves and their interest
and affiliation with the senior facility ad-hoc committee,
Mission and Vision Discussion
Mayor Art Prochaska presented the goals of the ad-hoc committee as immediate short-term
needs to assist with the location of the senior service association and also address possible
opportunities for other entities with interest in servicing the seniors at the same time. In addition,
he would like the committee to also address the long-term needs of services to seniors in the
future. Mayor Prochaska invited an open forum discussion by all the ad-hoc committee to share
their thoughts and visions.
Alderwomen Spears addressed the need to develop a community center that could also house a
resale shop, the Kendall County Food Pantry, Senior Services Association and the nutrition
programs of Salvation Army and Senior Services. In addition the community center should have
social opportunities for large group activities or small social outlets such as playing cards.
Joann Behrens expressed a need for clothing and furniture distribution.
Bette Schrenholtz also expressed a need for storage.
The group shared ideas for space needs for special event space, programming needs, adult day
care, respite for adults with Alzheimer, medically fragile seniors, nutrition programs—both
dining areas and meal preparations, and office space for all the current service providers. Bette
shared the directions for new community centers in Crystal Lake where there is senior center
wings on larger community center locations which also allow for intergenerational programs.
Bette shared the current space for Senior Services Association at Countryside Center is
approximately 6,000 square feet. The average is about 100 square feet per person in attendance.
Laura Brown thought that the square footage of Beecher was about 20,000 square feet, Mayor
Prochaska concurred.
NOTE—Discussion regarding the square footage of Beecher Building was incorrect. Actual
square footage is 8,000 square feet including all programming areas, storage, hallways, offices,
etc.
Mayor Prochaska explained some options as we look to the long-term solutions for a building
might be building a new building, developing private and public partnerships, or networking
with private service providers.
Kay Hatcher expressed a need to clarify the direction for senior services in Yorkville. Is the
committee and/or City addressing the needs for the City of Yorkville residents or expanding to
the surrounding county areas. Mayor Prochaska felt the committee could address this as part of
the long-term planning, but felt the current short-term goals should address the current services
being provided which did encompass the surrounding County areas.
Short Term Goals
Mayor Prochaska highlighted the immediate directions for the ad-hoe committee which included
exploring (1) Can all the senior programs and services move to the Beecher Building on short-
term basis, which would displace the Recreation Department; (2) is there an existing building
that the Senior Services Association can move into as soon as July of 2005; (3) Can a developer
or private entity build a building to accommodate the senior activities and services.
Discussion regarding the needs of the current programs and what they would need;
• Nutrition programs in-house and delivery preparation space would need about 6,000
square feet.
• Special event programming for large gathering would need about 6,000 square feet.
• Food pantry needs about 2,300 square feet on one level.
• Transportation to programs which include parking for vehicles.
• Offices ace for all the service providers which would encompass approximately 8-10
P
office areas and storage.
• Computer connections and access would be needed for all the service providers.
Bette did share that the current owner of Countryside stated that space would be secured or
developed to house Senior Service Association by July of 2005. There was discussion that
seniors need a secure place and need to avoid changing the sites frequently. Need to look for
long-term solutions.
Long Term Goals
The committee highlighted the need to determine the need for the community and future services
for seniors would need to include discussion regarding community center verse senior only
center. In addition the location would need to be highly visible with access to public
transportation and parking.
Rita shared the design of the Fox Valley Older Adults Center which she felt was a good design
and provided good access and program areas for seniors. She also felt that a building did not
need to be high end, the Fox Valley site was a pre-fabricated building.
Mayor Prochaska concluded the meeting by directing the committee members to brainstorm
possible ideas, needs and solutions and at the next meeting the committee could set some
directions for short-term and long-term directions for senior services.
