FACADE Committee Minutes 2001 03-21-01UNITED CITY OF YORKVILLE FACADE COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES MARCH 21, 2001 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Scheffrahn who asked for a roll call. Sandy Marker called the roll. Voting members present: Richard Scheffrahn Johanna Byram Joyce Barrett A quorum was established Others present: Mayor Prochaska Facade Liaison Alderwoman Burd Chairman Scheffrahn stated that the Masonic Building was to be considered tonight. He felt they met the basic guidelines for the review. Joyce Barrett asked what they had done in the rear of the building. Chairman Scheffrahn stated they had re-done three windows and the stairs. Mayor Prochaska stated he felt they had brought the rear of the building back to its basic condition. This is a not-for-profit organization, and not a business and they have been putting money into the building. They could still do some work to improve the look, and perhaps replace the awning. Chairman Scheffrahn stated he felt it made accessing it much easier, there are other issues that need to be addressed, but its a good step to utilize the back of the building. Mayor Prochaska stated it is a modest effort, but it is an improvement. They need to address some other things too. Chairman Scheffrahn stated the allowable costs involved with steps and windows the total allowable is $10,523.65 per Mr. Dettmer's memo. Mayor Prochaska stated that Mr. Dettmer asks if they meet the intent of the Facade Program. Replacing the bricked in windows in the front of the building with new plate glass windows was included in the work done. Chairman Scheffrahn asked what could be done to encourage them to watch the style. 1 Joyce Barrett state the committee could recommend they install a new awning to meet the Facade style intent. Mayor Prochaska stated this is a good starting effort, but they need to do more to bring this into compliance. Joyce Barrett stated she was comfortable with a recommendation for future work. Mayor Prochaska stated they didn't do enough to make the project look completed. Chairman Scheffrahn asked for a motion. Joyce Barrett motioned and Johanna Byram seconded that the Masonic Building receive a Facade Committee award of 50% of the cost of the approved improvement costs totaling 10,523.65 along with a recommendation they continue to make improvements within Facade Program Style Intent. On a roll call vote all members present voting yes. Motion carried 3 yes 0 Nay Chairman Scheffrahn asked for anything further. Johanna Byram stated her hairdresser had commented on how excited she was to see so much foot traffic downtown and felt it was due to all the good facade improvements. Mayor Prochaska agreed it does look good, and now the old hotel has work started toward improvements similar to those done at Bridge Street Cafe. Chairman Scheffrahn asked if parking new the old hotel had been resolved. Mayor Prochaska stated he had asked Mr.Nanninga to look into grant money for the possibility of replacing the fence at the sidewalk to something like the one at the Riverfront Park.
