UNITED CITY OF YORKVILLE
PUBLIC SAFETY MEETING
Thursday, January 27, 2011 6:30pm
City Conference Room
In Attendance:
Chairman Wally Werderich Alderman Rose Spears
Alderman Joe Plocher
Other City Officials in Attendance:
Police Chief Rich Hart
The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Chairman Wally Werderich
Citizen Comments:
None
Minutes for Correction/Approval:
December 20, 2010
It was noted there was no quorum at the last meeting.
New Business:
1. PS 2011-01 Police Reports for October, November and December 2010
Alderman Spears made special mention of a letter of thanks from Deputy Chief Dave
Delaney praising Charlie Graff. Mr. Graff, former City IT person, created a scheduling
software program for the Police Department that is efficient and saved money.
Also discussed briefly was a truck overweight ticket. Alderman Spears asked if time
allowed for monitoring of overweight trucks. Chief Hart responded that the police do
this as time allows and noted that the City only receives a small portion of the fine.
These reports will move forward to City Council on the consent agenda.
2. PS 2011-02 Request to Sell 1999 Ford Expedition (M123) at Auction
3. PS 2011-02 Request to Sell 2000 Ford Crown Victoria (M9) at Auction
4. PS 2011-04 Request to Sell 2000 Ford Crown Victoria (M21) at Auction
All 3 items were reviewed together. Chief Hart said the Expedition was old and would
cost too much to repair. It has over 100,000 miles and parts are no longer available. The
Chief noted that item #4 is a 2000 vehicle, not 2007 as indicated on the agenda. The
committee agreed to dispose of all 3 vehicles and these items will move to the consent
agenda.
5. PS 2011-05 Speed Limit on Country Hills Drive
Chairman Werderich had asked for this item to be on the agenda. He said an area
resident reported speeding on Country Hills Drive especially near the school. The current
speed is 30 mph and the resident requested a 25 mph zone.
Chief Hart said officers have been monitoring this site and have not apprehended any
speeders. They believe the speed may be perceptual, especially with the curvy road. At
this time, he said the department is not able to do a speed study. State law currently calls
for 30 mph and to lower a speed limit requires a study by Joe Wywrot’s department. It is
difficult to lower the speed limit and if it is changed on one City street, residents would
request this on many other streets. This would be at great cost to the City. Chief Hart
presented a report of when officers monitored the street.
Chairman Werderich asked to move this item to Old Business to allow for the resident to
attend this meeting and present his case. Chief Hart said his department will monitor the
resident’s mailbox which has been damaged. Eric Dhuse and Alderman George Gilson
have also talked with this resident.
Old Business:
1. PS 2010-23 Omaha Drive Traffic Study Results
Following a traffic study, Joe Wywrot recommended against a stop sign at the
intersection of Omaha and Grace. Ms. Spears said she brought this issue forward
following a citizen complaint. She will email the final decision to residents in her Ward.
No further action by committee.
Chairman Werderich said the City should always take any such complaints seriously.
Additional Business:
Alderman Plocher said allowing parking in front of the park on Rt. 47 causes a visibility
problem when turning onto Rt. 47 and suggested limited parking. Chief Hart will discuss
this with Bart Olson.
Alderman Spears said there is still a problem with motorists disobeying the stop sign in
Countryside. She said many drivers take a shortcut through this area. Chief Hart will put
this on the department priority list.
There was no further business and the meeting adjourned at 6:55pm.
