Green Committee Minutes 2011 07-25-11 APPROVED 9/26/11 Meeting Minutes YORKVILLE GREEN COMMITTEE July 25, 2011 7:00 P.M. - Yorkville Library Mission Statement: To advise the City Council of the United City of Yorkville, Illinois on ways to enhance the community environment and ways to equip and encourage citizens and businesses to participate in sustainable ecological practices. Call to Order: Keane called the meeting to order at 7:17 p.m with four (of seven) members present. Welcome Members and Guests: Marta Keane, Chairperson, Anne Engelhardt, Secretary, Becca Cherwin, . Cheryl Lee. No guests were present Approval of Minutes: Lee motioned to approve the June minutes as presented. Cherwin seconded. Motion passed unanimously. New Business: 1.City Garbage/Recycling Contract Engelhardt and Keane reviewed what they presented to the City Of Yorkville Administrative th Committee on Thursday, July 19. The handout that was given to members of that committee is attached to the meeting minutes. Committee Reports: th 1.Environmental Fair Committee - March 5 Final Summary th 2.Green Music Under the Stars - July 8 Cherwin reported that this event went really well and was well-attended. Cherwin, Lee, and Engelhardt attended. Tim Evans told her that he thought it went well and offered to help the Green Committee next year with this event. Two food vendors, invited by the City, were present. This event has much potential to grow and develop in the future, with foods, fresh produce, T-shirts featuring the band, and other environmental businesses. th 3.Share & Care Recycling Event – Oct 16 Planning Update Engelhardt reported that Mike Drendel, President of the Kendall County Fairgrounds, requested that we change our date to Saturday, October 22, due to a possible contract opportunity for the Fairgrounds. Engelhardt communicated with Bart Olson, who checked the date in the City’s calendar of events. Olson stated there are no conflicts and the Green Committee may change dates. Olson also pointed out that there is no one on staff to cover any publicity for this event due to the elimination of the Public Relations Department. Keane suggested that we ask for all the Green Committee publicity that is filed in the computer of former employee Glory Spies. Lee motioned to change the date to October 22. Cherwin seconded. Vote: all yes. Engelhardt motioned that the time frame be set for 9 – 2, unless BizBoo is scheduled that day, then the time will be 11- 3. Keane seconded. Vote: all “yes”. Keane will ask Bart Olson to have a City employee “on call” that day. Engelhardt will contact Marlin Hartman (date and financial support) and the Yorkville Police Department (use of traffic cones). Keane suggested that Cherwin could help with the distribution of mini-ads for the seven local banks to use in transactions. Lee suggested that the “re-use” area be limited to children’s items, toys, and books. Lee suggested that we think about a “challenge” for students that participate with an incentive, with our committee offering some types of incentives. One idea, suggested by Lee, is to award a “Class Green Certificate” for having the most signatures of students who participate (get signatures). Engelhardt will create a task list for our meeting by the August meeting. 4.Water Conservation Committee – Recommendations progress report a.Stormwater Management Program Plan 5.Chamber Green Committee – Update The Rain Barrel project is “going gangbusters”. The Auction for the Rain Barrels will be auctioned at the Junior Women’s Club Craft Fair on Saturday before Labor Day. Lee reported that currently 22 rain barrels have been distributed and artists are working on painting them. Some of the barrels are out in the public/ business locations. Some of the small businesses do not have a physical location for displaying their barrels. Parks and Rec Department has been contacted for possible placements at indoor venues for security and so the art work will not be scuffed. Lee reported that Speckman Therapeutic was awarded the Green Business Designation. The Chamber’s Green Committee now has five members. Recommendation Progress Reports: (These items were tabled to a future meeting.) 1.Tree Survey Recommendation - progress report 2.Tree City Recommendation - progress report 3.Electronic Recycling Perm Program progress – monthly totals, tour on June 27 4.Recycling in Parks, Athletic Fields, etc – grant update 5.Budget Line Items – Deposits, Expenses Keane will pursue the status of the line item for the Green Committee, which includes payments for 10 rain barrels. Lee suggested that the balance be given to the Green Committee with the agenda for each meeting.
