Senior Committee Minutes 2010 04-26-10 APPROVED 5/24/10 United City of Yorkville Senior Ad Hoc Committee Meeting April 26, 2010 Beecher Community Center Present: Cecelia Sanders, Bonnie Schradel, Bonnie Olsem, Robert Skidmore, Rita Murphy, Bette Schoenholtz Bette Schoenholtz opened the meeting. Introductions Approval of Minutes After review, Bob Skidmore made a motion to approve, Rita Murphy seconded. Approved. Bette Schoenholtz announced that Senior Services did get approval for $5000 for the meal program from the City and a $5000 reduction in rent and the City will try to raise $5000 for the program to cover this reduction. Old Business 1.Glory Spies was not present to discuss the insert. 2.The Walking program is something Parks and Rec is working on. Senior Services does have a program with the Cooperative Extension that they are trying to revive. Bette mentioned that in Elgin they have a pedometer walking program that was started with AAoA money. It includes an evidence based program of 12 weeks with sessions on nutrition included. Rita Murphy mentioned that only 2 or 3 participate in the walking program at Beecher now. 3.No one from Parks and Rec was present to talk about the idea to have registration for seniors done at the Beecher Center 4.The Needs survey was discussed and Bonnie has updated it from the last meeting. Bette stated is should also include special events and parties. Rita suggested adding Bunco and Bob suggested asking if people attend or want support groups. Bonnie Olsem mentioned special events and programs should be included. Bette mentioned that in Elgin they started a ‘point’ system for attending events or programs at the Center and twice a year they have a ‘mall shopping’ event where the points can be used to ‘purchase’ small gift items that Senior Services can buy at a discount. Bonnie Schradel mentioned a plan for a dance in August or September, possibly for Grandparents Day, with the Big Band performing and all ages invited to attend. Bonnie O stated the water bills will go out July 1, so the survey should be finished before that time in order to be included. 5.There was no one to address putting information on the website. 6. The renewal of the lease will be discussed in future City meetings. New Business Bob stated he has cases of bar soap that he can bring that can be handed out or used as ‘incentive’ gifts for the seniors. He can bring cases on a regular basis to be distributed. Page 2 – Yorkville Senior Ad Hoc committee He also is a member of the Knights of Columbus and they are prepared to help people in the area who are in immediate need of food. Cecelia Sanders mentioned the NORC (naturally occurring retirement community) idea that has been presented by the AAoA at the Aurora Township meeting last week. Aurora Township is thinking of working with some kind of program along this line to get in touch with seniors who may not have been contacted or know about services. Additional Business: th It was decided to meet regularly on the 4 Monday of each month. The next meeting will be May 24, 2010. There was some discussion on the refuse bill, but that may not change. Cecelia mentioned that there was a radio report of continuing the free ride for Illinois seniors, and cutting State Police in the state budget. However, this program of free rides for seniors is not statewide and seems to only be in the Chicago and collar counties to begin with.
