AD HOC SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 4:0o by Chairman Judith Arms.
Committee Members Present: Judith Arms,Judy Gilmour,Mark Johnson, Bonnie Olsem.
Guests: Rita Murphy, Cecelia Sanders,Bette Schoenholtz, Dean Curtis, (Prairie Times)Adalma
Stevens
New Business:
• Purpose of the committee—to find out what seniors want and advise the mayor,and present to
the City Council. Rita Murphy gave a brief overview of the former Senior Ad Hoc Committee of
2005, and explained the purpose of that committee was to find a facility for seniors. Minutes
from that committee were distributed by Bonnie Olsem.
• Recruitment of new members—Rita was asked to invite former members of the Senior Ad Hoc
Committee to join this committee.
• Brainstorm ways to provide/improve services for seniors—Mark questioned the purpose of
this group. He suggested 3 areas that this group could investigate: trips and events,services to
seniors(tax help,transportation, etc.), or a possible permanent facility. Bette planned to
present issues pertaining to a senior center to the Comprehensive Plan Committee meeting
this evening.There was discussion of the newly formed Yorkville Foundation and the role it
will play in finding a senior facility, and Bette will ask Foundation Committee members to
attend one of our future meetings. The idea of Day Care for seniors was discussed,noting that
Sandwich has a successful program.The issue of transportation for seniors was discussed,
noting that Kendall County is working on obtaining a grant for funding. Rita explained a new
program sponsored by Triad,called"Wellness Line."Adalma was asked to contact Mary
Unterbrunner about the possibility of including information for Seniors in the welcome packet
for new residents.Judith will be helping Adalma with ideas she has.
Cecelia mentioned an"Elder Friendly Summit"will be held April 16 at Trinity Church.
• Suggestions for Revising the committee name—It was agreed that the new name will be
"Yorkville Ad Hoc Senior Advisory Committee."
• Future meeting dates/times—The next meeting will be on Monday,March 31, 2008, 6:00 —
7:3o at the Austin room of the Beecher Community Building.
Additional Business:
• Mark suggested that we have a flip chart or white board available for the next meeting, and
Bonnie will check on this.
• Mark will bring his information received from other senior groups in other towns.
• Judith will plan the next agenda.
• We will continue the discussion of what issues are important to seniors.
